Heat Pump Repair
Like other types of heating systems, heat pumps require occasional repairs. Those can range from repairing minor issues or catastrophic failures. Regular maintenance helps prevent service calls for major repairs.
You Should Repair Your Heat Pump If:
How do you know if your heat pump needs to be repaired? First, a few signs and symptoms can indicate the heat pump system is not functioning at peak capacity. Those include:
- The heat pump makes too much noise, or you notice different types of noises from its regular operation. Those can include dripping sounds, whining, bangs, or clunks, or the unit is louder than usual.
- The heat pump turns on and off more rapidly; a situation we call “short cycling.” When short cycling occurs, the unit thinks it must heat or cool the house more often regardless of the ambient temperature. It is a sign that either the thermostat or the heat pump is not functioning correctly. It also wastes energy and drives up your energy bill.
- The house is not comfortable, even though the heat pump is working. Reduced heating and cooling output is a sign that the blower is not pushing as much air or the heat pump is not functioning properly.
- You notice higher energy bills, which means that the heat pump is working too hard to produce the same level of comfort.
- The unit is older than 10 years. Generally, heat pumps can last upwards of 15, sometimes to 20 years. A heat pump older than 10 years is more prone to breakdowns and may require more frequent service calls.
If you are concerned that there may be a problem with your heat pump, give us a call. We are happy to answer your questions and can schedule a service call if warranted.
Do Heat Pumps Need More Frequent Repairs?
Heat pumps are generally more efficient at heating and cooling than are other HVAC options. They may, however, require more service and maintenance.
Most heating appliances, such as your furnace or air conditioner, require yearly service. A heat pump system that you use for heating and cooling requires service twice per year. You would call for service for the cold season to check the heating side of the system. You would also call in the spring to have the cooling side of the system tuned-up and serviced.
Because the unit is both a heater and a cooler, it is recommended to maintain it twice per year at six-month intervals.
